The »Historisch-politischen Blätter für das katholische Deutschland«, which was published in Munich from 1838–1923, for decades constituted the most versatile, widely read, and influential journal of German Catholicism. Thanks to its varied content, sophisticated argumentation, and decisive conclusions, it became »the main organ of the gathering German Catholic political liberation movement,« according to K. Buchheim. The journal’s success rested in large part on its ability to attract many high-quality contributors. Unfortunately, the large majority of articles appeared without the author's names. As a result of systematic research in editorial staff archives, the editors of this index were able to identify the authors of around 10,000 such articles. It is now clear that the journal’s roughly 1,000 contributors included many of the most outstanding personalities of German Catholicism: Görres, Hertling, and Erzberger; Döllinger, Janssen, and Pastor; Möhler, Scheeben, and Guardini. This index constitutes an important addition to scholarship on German Catholicism in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
