Hans Dieter Denk: Die christliche Arbeiterbewegung in Bayern bis zum Ersten Weltkrieg.

Since the mid 1800s, and especially from the time of intense industrialization around the turn of the 20th century, the Christian Workers’ Movement in Bavaria assumed a formidable place in the overall workers’ movement in southern Germany. Hans Dieter Denk’s study depicts the origins, development, organization, publications, self-image, and effectiveness of Christian workers’ organizations in their myriad manifestations, right down to the Catholic associations for female domestic servants. Denk focuses most intensely on the Catholic workers’ associations (known today as Katholische Arbeiterbewegung or KAB) and Christian labor unions. The book, based wholly on primary source research, contributes to the history of the German workers’ movement and to Bavarian history, as well as to the widely debated question about relations between church and workers.
